BYU to erect new science building

Construction of a new science building on the Brigham Young University campus has been approved by the BYU Board of Trustees. The board also approved renovation of the 41-year-old Eyring Science Center after the new building is completed.

The new science building will be built next to the Nicholes Chemistry Stores Building on the south perimeter of the campus.Ed Cozzens, assistant administrative vice president, Physical Facilities Division, said the architectural firm of Fowler, Ferguson, Kingston & Ruben of Salt Lake City has been commissioned to draw final plans for the building, in collaboration with Research Facilities Design, an engineering consulting firm in San Diego, Calif.

Cozzens said planning for the approximate 150,000-square-foot building will take about a year, followed by a two-year construction period.

Once the new building is completed and occupied, the university will begin a staged renovation of the Eyring Science Center, a project that is expected to take about another three years, Cozzens said.

The new building will house laboratories, offices, classrooms and several large lecture halls. The four- to six-story structure also will be used for Church services by LDS student wards.

The modern, state-of-the-art facilities provided by these two projects will greatly benefit the teaching and research activities of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, according to Stan L. Albrecht, academic vice president.
